Lazy Bear Lodge history

History

When National Geographic discovered Churchill and its very friendly wildlife in the early 1980's, local resident Wally Daudrich was there to help the first photographers and visitors find the wildlife which would congregate around Churchill. Wally has guided visitors to Churchill since that time. After meeting his lovely Colorado bride, Wally and Dawn, together with the couples love for the outdoors, handcrafted the Lazy Bear Lodge. First as a small takeout shack and eventually into the world-class wilderness resort that it is today. This one-of-a-kind facility required the couple to work hard and sacrifice  to make the Lazy Bear the unusual place that it is.

Of course, when you live in a town as isolated as Churchill, the best way to get things done is to do them yourself. So in 1999 they started hauling logs out of the Boreal Forest by snowmobile and trailering them to Churchill.

Over 1000 logs made this journey, each one handcrafted from trees that died in a forest fire. The first floor of the Lodge was completed and opened in 1999. Then, working only in the winter off-season when temperatures can drop below –40° F, they finished the Lazy Bear Lodge by 2000.

Much of the Lodge’s character comes from the stunted and twisted wood logs. The Lazy Bear Lodge is not only the largest handcrafted log building in Manitoba, it offers an atmosphere that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world. Guests often comment on the pleasant aroma the logs continue to provide.

The Daudrich family continues to own and operate the Lazy Bear Lodge. The property sits on the edge of continuous wilderness right through the North Pole, promising a unique, memorable experience to every visitor.
