The first stones for the fort were laid on June 3, 1732. It took over 40 years to complete, mostly because workers spent more time trying to survive in the harsh surroundings than they did working on the structure. It was primarily used for defensive purposes and Hudson's Bay Company employees. Reconstruction took place in the 1930's, and the fort stands today as a memorial to the rivalry between the French and the English for control of the Hudson Bay and its resources.
