Wilderness Expedition

Wilderness Expedition

Dickens Creek camp site

The Lazy Bear Wilderness Expedition is not for the faint of heart. After a night at the Lazy Bear Lodge, a float plane drops us off at the Headwaters of the South Knife River where we embark on Huck Finn-style rafts that will take us deep into the Boreal Forest. For three days we will camp along the same shores that have gone virtually untouched since 18th century explorer Sam Hearne and his trusted Dene guide Matonabee first discovered their beauty.

We’ll spend time kayaking along Dicken’s Creek and Lofthouse Lake where the wildlife thrives in the unspoiled territory. Your knowledgeable (and armed!) guide will help you stay on the lookout for moose, black bear and wolves.

Upon your return to the Lazy Bear Lodge in Churchill we will spend a day kayaking among the beluga whales in the Hudson Bay. You will also have the option to snorkel among several of the over 60,000 beluga whales that descend off the coast of Churchill every year.

The next morning we travel by jet boat to the Seal River in search of the mighty polar bear. With its large fish population, the river can support a vast population of wildlife in the summer months: polar bears, ringed seals, caribou, beluga whales and more. Bring your binoculars and camera.

Finally, we’ll spend a day relaxing around Churchill on a cultural heritage and bus tour. We’ll visit Historic Cape Merry, learn the proud history of our town and see the polar bear jail.

If you want the full arctic experience, this is it. Spaces on these once-in-a-lifetime adventures are very limited so book your 2010 Lazy Bear Wilderness Expedition soon.
